This thesis concerns the preparation of polyolefin nanocomposites using the polymerization filler technique. The polymer matrices polypropylene and polyethylene were synthesized with a metallocene catalyst system in the presence of a filler material. The composites obtained were characterized with respect to their mechanical, rheological and thermical properties.
Halloysitenanotubes (HNT) and MgO nanoparticles were used as filler materials. HNTs are of hollow tubular shape and have a length of approximately 230 nm and a diameter of 50 nm. Halloysite is a natural aluminosilicate clay with a molecular formula Al2Si2(OH)4• 2 H2O. The HNTs are acidic with terminal hydroxyl groups. The MgO particles have a broad size distribution of 50 - 1 000 nm with no uniform structure. MgO is basic (pH _ 10). Both filler materials can be dispersed in polar solvents like water and ethanol, but not toluene. A dispersion in toluene can be reached by addition of methylaluminoxane (MAO). MAO acts additionally as a stabilizer for the dispersion. It was shown, that the filler material interacts with MAO, absorbing it on the surface. TEM-pictures of the MAO impregnated HNTs show a 6 nm thick layer on the surface. EDX measurements suggest the presence of Al2O3.
The preparation of nanocomposites via in situ polymerization of ethylene or propylene was investigated in an 1 L reactor. The impact of temperature, catalyst and co-catalyst concentration was mapped regarding the activity of the catalyst and molecular weight of the products. Composites with UHMW-PE and LLD-PE as a matrix were synthesized mediated by catalyst (BuCp)2ZrCl2 and using TMA next to MAO as co-catalysts. It was shown, that homogenous composites with HNTs and MgO were preferably obtained with TMA as a co-catalyst. The activity of the TMA co-catalyst system was dependent on the ratio of TMA to HNTs and may be higher than with MAO. This behavior was not observed in the presence of MgO particles. The activity of the catalyst was lower with the TMA filler combination as co-catalyst than with MAO. The presence of an α-olefin as a comonomer for the synthesis of LLD-PE resulted in a decrease in activity.
Isotactic and syndiotactic PP as a polymer matrix were synthesized with respectively (Me2Si(2-Me-4PhInd)2ZrCl2 and ([(o-MePh)(p-OMePh)C(Cp)(2,7-tBu2Flu)]ZrCl2 as catalyst and MAO as a co-catalyst. The PP/HNT composites are a well dispersed system and show a good contact of the HNTs to the polymer matrix. A relative amount of MAO to HNT is of importance to reach such composites. A ratio of 1.1 mol co-catalyst to 1 mol filler did not lead to a polymerization. With a ratio of 2.2 polymerization was successful. Composites of MgO particles could not be prepared without agglomerated filler. The reactions could successfully be performed at the same conditions in a 10 L reactor, giving a yield between 430 g and 550 g per reaction for LLD-PE (branching degree of 1.8 - 3.2 mol%). LLD-PE composites with a MgO filler content of 2.4 and 9.5% were obtained but agglomerates were formed. Prolonged reaction times (iPP synthesis) increased the yield from 700 g to 1 300 g, simultaneously increasing the PDIs of the products. iPP/HNT composites with 4 - 12% filler content and a yield of 500 - 700 g were accessible after optimization. The composites obtained were characterized regarding the distribution of the filler, the mechanical and rheological properties. It could be shown, that the presence of 6 - 7% HNTs in the isotactic PP matrix resulted in a maximal increase in toughness and E-modulus. The tensile strength increased by up to 7% (37.2 MPa) and E-modulus by up to 22% (1 440 MPa). The elongation at break remained above 400%. The bending stress could be increased to 52 MPa (+40%) and the bending module to 2 040 MPa (+48%). Samples produced by co-extrusion of iPP and HNTs did not show such high mechanical values. Furthermore, the impact strength could be increased by 7%. The viscosity of the iPP/HNT composites did not alter significantly in the presence of HNTs. A faster thermal degradation of the composites was observed in comparison to polyolefins synthesized without filler material. The mechanical properties of sPP also improved after filling with HNTs. MgO is not suitable as a reinforcing filler because of its morphology. No significant improvement of the material properties of the MgO composites was found, as expected. The mechanical properties of the LLDPE/MgO composites were dominated by the branching degree and not by content of filler.
