Dinuclear late transition metal complexes with electron configurations higher than d6 with metal-ligand multiple bonds are still unknown due to the lack of empty metal pi-acceptor orbitals which can build up a pi-bond. Schöffel has first synthesized a dinuclear bridged iridium-azido-complex 9-MeIrOTf. The thermal or photochemical elimination of nitrogen from 9-MeIrAlpftb4 was investigated, but the characterization of the compound was incomplete due to the paramagnetic behavior of the material. Anyway a dinuclear iridium-nitrido-complex 10-Ir was suggested by calculations. In this work this suggestion is verified and the complex 10-Ir was fully characterized. At first the azido complexes of type 9-Ir were synthesized by known procedures. A new and more efficient procedure was developed for this compound. An equilibrium of the dinuclear complex 9-Ir with the mononuclear complex 5-Ir and 8-Ir was experimentally verified by low temperature ESI-MS through the presence of the exchange product from a mixture of different substituted complex 9-Ir. Thermolysis or photolysis of complex 9-Ir yields complex 10-Ir. The constitution of complex 10-Ir was elucidated by analysis of its crystal structure. The PDI-Ligand of complex 10-Ir is reduced, which is fully consistent with a g-Value of 1.95 from EPR-measurements. Another proof was provided by Evans-measurements of complex 10-Ir. A spin-state cross over between S=0 ground state and S=1 was proven by vT-1H-NMR-measurements and confirmed the observed deviation from the Curie-Weiß behavior by Schulz. There was no cross-over products observed from a mixture of differently substituted complexes of 10-Ir in low or high temperature ESI-MS measurements. The reason is a multiple-bond character of the Ir-N-bond which prevents dissociation into mononuclear complexes. This assumption is based due to the observed short Ir-N-Bond of 1.80 Å. The cyclic voltammogram of complex 10-Ir in THF revealed two reduction waves at –300 and –800 mV. This created the idea to synthesize the neutral and anionic complexes 11-Ir and 12-Ir. The reaction of 10-Ir with NaBEt3H as unconventional reducing agents yields the neutral complex 11-Ir in good yields. Further reduction of 11-Ir with NaBEt3H led to the anionic nitrido bridged complex 12-Ir. The neutral complex 11-Ir can be also obtained in the comproportionation reaction of complexes 10-Ir and 12-Ir. The structural assignment of paramagnetic complex 11-Ir was established based on EPR-, NMR- and IR-spectroscopic, ESI-mass spectrometric and elemental analysis, which was fully consistent with the proposed constitution. Besides the electrochemical and mass spectrometric data further indirect support for a dinuclear structure was obtained from the X-ray analysis of the anionic complex 12-Ir. The nitrido bridged dinuclear structure is maintained in the anionic complex 12-Ir. DFT calculations for model system of complex 9-Ir, 10-Ir, 11-Ir and 12-Ir show that a significant amount of charge is transferred from the metal to the PDI-Ligand. The CImin-NImin- und CImin-CPy-bond length of the PDI ligand in complex 10-Ir and 12-Ir shows the delocalized charge. LOBA calculation for model system of complex 9-Ir, 10-Ir, 11-Ir and 12-Ir, established an d8-electron configuration, which is verified through XPS-data of complex 10-Ir and 12-Ir. Moreover, the oxidation state of the PDI-ligand and nitrido-ligand in the complexes 9-Ir, 10-Ir, 11-Ir and 12-Ir is determined. For the nitrido-ligand in all complexes, an +I oxidation state was calculated. The reaction of complex 12-Ir with methyl triflate yield complex 13-Ir. The nitrido bridged dinuclear structure is maintained in the cationic square-pyramidal complex 12-Ir. The 1H-NMR-spectrum, XPS-data, ESI-MS-spectra and X-ray analysis provide arguments for the proposed electron configuration shown below: 13-Ir: [((PDI0)(Ir+(d8))2-μ-N+(s2p2)] The reaction of complex 10-Ir with CO yields the complexes 14-Ir and 15-Ir. Complex 15-Ir has an anionic counterion [Ir(NCO)2(CO)2], which proves the transformation of the nitrido-ligand to an isocyanato-ligand. Carbon monoxide as a reducing agent led to the anionic isocanato complex [Ir(NCO)2(CO)2].
