Half sandwich compounds such as Cp’TiX3 (Cp’ = cyclopentadienyl-, X = halogen-, alkoxy-, phenoxy-) in combination with methylaluminoxane are known for their ability to polymerize styrene syndiospecifically. In this work, a number of phenyl and naphthyl substituted indenyl titanium trichlorides were synthesized and characterized. The four different naphthyl substituted half sandwich titanocenes were prepared for the first time. These complexes were used with MAO for the syndiospecific polymerization of styrene and their polymerization properties were compared to those of CpTiCl3 and IndTiCl3.
Special attention was given to the dependence of the polymerization activity on the Al:Ti-ratio, which is an important parameter for the optimization of the polymerization costs. At 30 °C polymerization temperature the investigated half sandwich compounds showed their highest catalytic activities at an Al:Ti-ratio of about 500-1500. The indenyl substituted titanium complexes reached the activity maximum at lower Al:Ti-ratios compared to CpTiCl3/MAO. A similar behavior was also observed at 50 °C polymerization temperature, but here the maximal polymerization activities were observed at Al:Ti-ratios of about 1000-2000 for the indenyl substituted half sandwich titanocenes and above 5000 for CpTiCl3.
Another investigated aspect was the kinetic behavior of the catalysts. The indenyl substituted titanium complexes were generating much more stable catalysts in contrast to CpTiCl3, which led therefore to an enhanced long term stability of the active sites. Especially the compound [2-(b-Naph)Ind]TiCl3 showed a very good long term stability in these investigations, which even persisted at 50 °C.
The polystyrenes that had been obtained with these catalysts have melting points of 259-272 °C in dependence of the substitution pattern and the polymerization temperature. The polymers obtained with the indenyl substituted titanocenes have melting points which were 6-10 °C higher compared to those synthesized with CpTiCl3/MAO. The syndiotacticities of the polystyrenes were very high. They were generally higher than 95 %. The molar masses of the polymers obtained were between 58 000 g/mol and 1 060 000 g/mol, the indenyl substituted catalysts led to polymers with much higher molar masses compared to CpTiCl3. In addition the catalysts with 2-aryl substituted indenyl ligands enlarged the polymer’s molar mass, more than the corresponding 1-aryl substituted complexes.
In the second part of the dissertation experiments were performed concerning the in situ fluorination of the half sandwich titanocenes. Three different compounds were tested as a potential fluorinating agent for CpTiCl3: BF3·Et2O, AlF3 and Diisobutyl aluminum fluoride (DIBALF). Of these substances DIBALF was the most suitable compound for the enhancement of the polymerization activity of CpTiCl3/MAO, while AlF3 showed little positive effect on the activity because of its low solubility in organic solvents. BF3·Et2O led to a decrease of the activity due to strong coordination at the active sites.
The experiments showed a strong dependence of the polymerization activity on the amount of DIBALF. Small amounts of DIBALF up to 0,5 mmol led to an increase of the activity up to 70% while a further increase of the DIBALF concentration resulted in a decrease of the activity due to substitution reactions at the active site.
The polymer properties of the polystyrenes after in situ fluorination varied strongly. While the addition of BF3·Et2O and AlF3 had only little influence on the physical properties of the polystyrenes, the addition of DIBALF led to a decrease of the molar masses and the melting temperatures depending on the DIBALF concentration. This effect was due to an enhanced tendency to chain transfer reactions.
Further experiments were performed for the in situ fluorination of IndTiCl3 and a couple of naphthyl substituted indenyl titanium trichlorides, which showed a completely different activity behavior than CpTiCl3/MAO/DIBALF. For IndTiCl3/MAO/DIBALF is was shown that the addition of even small amounts of DIBALF resulted in a decrease of the polymerization activity. This could be due to a stronger coordination of the alkyl aluminum fluoride to the indenyl complex, which would inhibit the activation reaction of the catalyst precursor.
The analysis of the oxidation states of the titanium species showed for all investigated catalysts an enhanced reduction of titanium to Ti(III)and Ti(II) after addition of DIBALF. There was no explicit connection between the concentration of the different titanium species and the polymerization activities, so the reason for this contrary behavior of the catalysts has to be found in the differing electronic properties of the complexes and the special interactions of the ligand sphere with the titanium centers.
