The present thesis aims towards the synthesis of complexes of molybdenum and vanadium with ligands which contain nitrogen and sulphur functions und thus model the coordination environment of Mo and V in oxo-transfer enzymes (having molybdopterin as a cofactor constituent) and nitrogenases. The ligands have been reacted with the precursor compounds MoO2(acac)2, MoOCl4, MoCl5, MoCl4(thf)2, MoCl3(thf)3, VO(OiBu)3, VO(OiPr)3, VOBr2(thf)2, VOCl2(thf)2, VCl3(thf)3, VBr3(thf)3, V(acac)3 and VCl2(tmeda)2. Selected investigations have also been carried out with WOCl4, WCl4(thf)2 and WCl4(dme)2: in several molybdenum containing oxo-transferases the Mo is replaced by W.

The following ligands have been synthesised and reacted with precursor compounds:
2,6-Bis(2-mercaptophenylthio)dimethyl-pyridine (NS4)
Bis(2-methylpyridyl)-2-mercaptoethylamine (N3S)
N-(2-Mercaptobenzyl)-N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (N3Sar)
Bis(2-methyl-(1-methyl-imidazolyl)-2-mercapto-ethylamine (N5S)
1-Methyl-2-imidazoliden-1-methyl-imidazolyl-methylen (N5)
N-(2-Mercaptophenyl)-picolinamide (N2S)
Bis(thiophen-1-carbo)-o-phenylendiamide (N2O2S2)
N-(2-Mercaptophenyl)-thiosalicylidenamine (NS2)

In the course of the ligand synthesis, several intermediates and by-products could be characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XD). The reaction of the ligands in their protonated form, or activated as Li or Na salts, in many instances lead to complexes of the general composition [MXnL]q, [MOXnL]q and [MO2XnL]q, where M = Mo, V and W, X = Cl and Br, n = 0-2, q = charge. In the case of L = NS2 and N5, well defined products have not been obtained. The complexes were characterised by IR, NMR and EPR spectroscopies as well as by FAB-MS and elemental analysis.
The reaction between NS4 and MoCl4(thf)2 lead to [MoO(NS4)]•THF, the reaction with MoOCl4 and the lithium salt of NS4 to a complex system. In part, the constituents contain dithiochatecholato ligands (S2), formed by fragmentation of NS4, and are additionally stabilised by [Li(thf)n]+ units. All of the complexes of NS4 and S2 have been structurally characterised. The compounds with the S2 ligands contain molybdenum in the oxidation states +IV, +V and +VI and hence are models for molybdopterin-based oxotransferases such as sulfite oxidase.

From the reaction between MoO2(acac)2 and N2S, -octamolybdate [Mo8O26]4- was isolated as a crystalline by-product, stabilised by two [Li(thf)3]+ units coordinated to two terminal oxo groups, plus two Na+ which – coordinated each to three terminal oxo and three acetate ligands – link the octamolybdate to two dinuclear units of composition [Mo(V)O(acac)(µ-O)2 (µ acetate)Mo(V)O{Li(thf)2acetate}2].

Several of the model compounds introduced in this thesis, viz. MoO(NS4)/(S2)2 and [MoOCl(N3S)]q, proofed catalytic bromoperoxidase and oxo-transfer activity.
