This work deals with the synthesis and pyrolysis of metallocene/MAO catalyzed ethene/norbornene-copolymers.
The object of the present study was to synthesize strongly alternating semi-crystalline ethene/norbornene-copolymers with highly substituted C1-symmetric zirconocenes by means of [Ph2Si(Flu)(Ind)]ZrCl2 (1), [Ph2Si(OctHFlu)(Ind)]ZrCl2 (2), [Me2Si(OctHFlu) (Ind)]ZrCl2 (3), [Ph2Si(OctHFlu)(2-MeInd)] ZrCl2 (4) and [Me2Si(OctHFlu)(2-MeInd)]ZrCl2 (5). It was possible to solve the relationship between catalyst design and the copolymer properties on the basis of micro- and macroscopic level. A detailed sequence analysis by NMR investigation has demonstrated that the monomer insertion follows the retention mechanism. Due to the catalyst’s heterotopic sides it was possible to produce copolymers with 42 mol% copolymer incorporation showing exclusively erythrodiisotactic alternating or isolated norbornene sequences. Caused by the bulky structure of the catalyst’s ligands the formation of norbornene-blocks and syndiotactic alternating sequences obstructing the crystallization of the polymer could be prevented successfully. The alternating character of the ethene/norbornene-copolymers was increased by highly selective metallocenes with substituted fluorenyl ligands. This led to semi crystalline copolymers with melting points of 220 °C starting from 32 mol% norbornene incorporation. These melting points are caused by isotactic alternating ethene/norbornene sequences. In contrast, the unsubstituted reference catalyst 1 shows amorphous behavior starting from 12 mol% comonomer content. Consequently it became possible for the first time to synthesize alternating E/N-copolymers showing melting points with such a low comonomer content. Furthermore the molar mass investigations undermined the positive influence of dimethyl bridged systems 3 and 5 resulting in a doubling of the molar mass covering all comonomer contents compared with catalyst 1. One of the dominant factors for the properties of ethene/norbornene-copolymer is the norbornene content – high norbornene incorporation results in high glass-transition temperatures and high mechanical characteristics. Various techniques, based on analytical methods like NMR, DSC or GPC, for its determination have been developed in the past. Caused by solubility or decomposition problems all these techniques are limited to describe the whole possible incorporation. Consequently the second part of this study deals with the development of a new method without these limitations caused by traditional methods. Following the depolymerization of this new type of copolymer, characteristical pyrolysis products have been analyzed. It became possible to find a correlation between copolymer content and the formation of typical depolymerization products by Py-GC/MS covering the whole possible norbornene incorporation. Consequently, this new method was successfully verified by traditional methods. Due to their unique properties industrial ethene/norbornene-copolymers show a market growth which is higher than average and makes them interesting for appropriate recycling solutions. Therefore, the third part of this study investigates the possibility to convert this type of polymer into valuable products following the Hamburg Process by fluidized-bed pyrolysis. Due to the excellent heat transfer resulting in short residence times this process proofed to be a suitable method for the depolymerization of cyclic olefin copolymers. Furthermore, the dominant influence of the pyrolysis temperature for the product distribution was discovered: The higher the pyrolysis temperature the more selective are the depolymerization reactions. This aims at increasing the desired aromatic compounds in the pyrolysis oil to high levels. In addition it became possible to reduce the tar fraction to a minimum of less than 10 wt% in experiment E3 favoring the formation of gases. Due to the high ethene content, formed by retro-Diels-Alder reaction of the comonomer
2-norbornene, the gas can be used as olefin source or for heating the fluidized bed reactor. Not only the pyrolysis temperature, but also the influence of the residence time and the type of fluidizing gas has been studied. It was shown with higher residence times to increase the aromatic character of the oil. This effect was even more accelerated using looped pyrolysis gas. Overall it could be proven that it is possible to gain aromatic enriched oils by fluidized bed pyrolysis of ethene/norbornene-copolymers. Caused by a drastic increase of the prices for aromatic compounds within the last three years they represent an industrial highly desired product.
