1. „Die Polymerisation von Olefinen mit Donor-substituierten Halbsandwich-Chrom-Komplexen“ (Basell Polyolefin GmbH);
2. „Die Copolymerisation von Propen mit dem sterisch gehinderten Monomer 3-Methyl-1-buten“ (Evonik Oxeno GmbH);

The present work takes up as subject various aspects of the olefin polymerization catalyzed by transition metals.
In cooperation with Evonik Oxeno GmbH as well as with Basell Polyolefin GmbH three topics were worked on:
1. “The polymerization of olefins with donor-substituted halfsandwich chromium complexes” (Basell Polyolefin GmbH);
2. “The copolymerization of propylene with the sterically hindered monomer 3-methyl-1-butene” (Evonik Oxeno GmbH);
3. “The copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene respectively 1-octene and the respective isomeric (w-1)-methyl branched a-olefins 4-methyl-1-pentene as well as 6-methyl-1-heptene” (Evonik Oxeno GmbH).
In context with the copolymerization of sterically hindered olefins, also norbornene was copolymerized with propylene.
Within the project initiated by Basell Polyolefin GmbH, polymerization series were carried out in which six chromium complexes were investigated regarding their polymerization behavior towards propylene. The influence of the monomer concentration and of the polymerization temperature were intensely analyzed. Furthermore, a few polymerizations were carried out using 1-butene.
While for such single-site chromium catalysts in the literature nearly exclusively the polymerization of ethylene is described, the present work deals with the polymerization of propylene including mechanistic aspects.
Because of the “chain run” tendency after frequent 2,1-insertion of all investigated chromium complexes, by polymerization of only propylene, the synthesis of polymers with a structure similar to ethylene/propylene copolymers with regioinverted propylene units is possible. The process of the development of the results concerning the NMR spectra up to the almost complete clarification is traced. At the end, a calculation of the “ethylene share” is possible.
Within the scope of the projects, which were treated on behalf of Evonix Oxeno GmbH, (w-1)-methyl branched a-olefins were used for the copolymerization of propylene and also of ethylene. In each of the cases, the influence of the feed composition and of the polymerization temperature on the copolymerization results were investigated.
3-Methyl-1-butene was used in the copolymerization of propylene for the first time. rac-[Me2C(Ind)2]ZrCl2 and [Me2C(Cp)(Flu)]ZrCl2 in combination with MAO were used as catalyst systems. In this connection, an assignment of the signals of the 13C-NMR spectrum has been proposed, so that a determination of the incorporation rates of the comonomer was possible.
For the copolymerization of ethylene with the linear a-olefins 1-hexene and 1-octene and the branched olefins 4-methyl-1-pentene respectively 6-methyl-1-heptene, the metallocene [Ph2C(Cp)(2,7-ditertBuFlu)]ZrCl2 was used. As the same catalyst was used for all copolymerizations with the different monomers and preferably the same polymerization conditions were chosen, a good comparability between the individual polymerization series is given, which is not so easy to find in the literature.
For the determination of the comonomer incorporation rate of the ethylene/6-methyl-1-heptene copolymers, which were synthesized within this work for the first time, it was necessary firstly to assign the signals in the 13C-NMR spectrum to the carbon atoms of the polymer chain and to propose a method for the determination of the incorporation rate.
Besides, investigations concerning the copolymerization of propylene and norbornene were carried out. In the first instance, the results give an explanation, why these copolymers are so neglected in the literature up to now despite the success of ethylene/norbornene copolymers. Beside the moderate, strongly with increasing comonomer incorporation decreasing activities, the reason has to be seen in the many questions arisen in the course of the investigations and which cannot be fully answered at present.
The same catalyst systems as for the propylene/3-methyl-1-butene copolymerizations were used.
Very high incorporation rates are easily accessible. It even appeared, that the share of norbornene units in the product can be higher than the propylene share.
Only oligomeric products were obtained.
The oligomeric products obtained with the C2-symmetric metallocene and MAO have despite low molar masses high glass transition temperatures, which remarkably increase with increasing norbornene content in the polymer. Thus the glass transition temperature of the product synthesized at 30°C and a norbornene share in the feed of 40 mol% with rac-[Me2C(Ind)2]ZrCl2/MAO constitutes approximately 207°C.
