The new material group of polyolefin nanocomposites bear good prospects for manifold future use as already polyethylene and polypropylene have got a lot of applications as plastics. With the varity of the catalysts and the monomers it is possible to produce for nearly every use the adequate polyolefins. The incorporation of nanoparticles or fibers caused an expansion of the application area, and particularly led to an improvement of the stiffness, conductivity and crystallisation velocity. In this thesis different nanocomposites were synthesized by in-situ polymerization. Cadmium selenide (10 nm), silicon carbide (25 nm), titanium carbide (25 nm), alumina (20 nm, 37,5 nm and 40 nm), boron nitride (200 nm), cobalt ferrite (35-55 nm), calcium carbonate (70 nm), magnesia (100 nm) and silica (200 to 250 nm) were applied as nanofillers. Fibers and whiskers like polyethylenterephthalate and silicium carbide were also used. Ethylene and propylene were chosen as polymermatrix. The coating of the nanoparticles with methylaluminoxane results in little or no polymerization activity after filtration. Therefore, the other polymerizations were run without any filtration. The nanoparticles were suspended in toluene and were shifted with MAO. After the saturation with ethylene or propylene the polymerization was started with the addition of zirconocene. If the amount of the nanoparticles is higher at the same condition, the filler content, e.g. cadmium selenide, will increase. A reason is the decrease of the polymerization activity. Contaminations could be on the surface of the nanoparticles. For the synthesis of the nanoparticles trioctylphosphinoxid (TOPO), tetradecylphosphonacid (TDPA) und hexadecylamin (HDA) were used.
Electron microscopy pictures of the silicon carbide and titanium carbide nanocomposites showed an equal distribution of the nanoparticles in the polymer. The melting points were detected at 140 °C, the crystallinities between 40 and 60 %, the crystallisation temperatures from 110 to 120 °C and the molecular weights between 120000 and 320000 g/mol.
Polypropylene-nanocomposites with different fillers were synthesized with different catalysts rac-[Et(IndH4)2]ZrCl2, Me2Si(Flu)(Ind)ZrCl2 and rac [Me2Si(2 Me 4 (1 Naph)Ind)2]ZrCl2 were synthesized by in-situ polymerization. Three different alumina (disperal alumina 20, disperal Alumina 40 und alumina 99,5 % from Alfa Aesar), magnesia, boron nitride, calcium carbonate, silica and cobalte ferrite were used as fillers. Polymerizations with the rac-[Et(IndH4)2]ZrCl2 were performed at 1.0 and 2.5 bar propene pressure. Using the other two catalysts systems nanocomposites only with 1.0 bar propene pressure were applied. The filler content depends on the catalyst by using the same amount of 500 mg nanoparticles in the feed. With the Me2Si(Flu)(Ind)ZrCl2-catalyst the highest filler content can be reached. Using the other two catalysts the filler content was lower than 5 wt%. The nanocomposites produced with the rac-[Et(IndH4)2]ZrCl2-catalyst and 1.0 bar propene pressure had higher filler content than the nanocomposites, which were synthesized with the same catalyst but the higher propene pressure of 2.5 bar. Different filler contents are resulting from reduced catalyst activity caused by lower pressure of propene. The melting points, crystallinities, glass transition temperatures, crystallisation temperatures and molecular weights depend on the used catalysts and the monomer concentration. A lower influence of the size of the nanoparticles on the preceding properties was observed. A trend could be seen that the isotacticity increases with a lower size of the nanoparticles.
Magnetic nanocomposites could be synthesized with cobalt ferrite and polypropylene. Electron microscopy pictures of the nanocomposites show spheres, which are composed of many small cobalt ferrite particles encased with polypropylene. The melting points of the nanocomposites vary between 159 and 161 °C, the crystallinities augment from 42 to 54 % and the crystallisation temperatures fluctuate between 114 and 123 °C. Analysis resulted in molecular weights between 150000 and 300000 g/mol.
Additionally, polyethylene- and polypropylene-composites with polyester fibers were produced by in-situ polymerization. The filler content increases with a higher amount of the polyester fibers in the feed. The activity depends on the catalyst used. With a higher amount of the filler the activity decreases slightly. A regular distribution was received by in-situ polymerization. The fibers were covered with polymer. The melting points, crystallinities, crystallization temperatures and the molecular weights also depend on the catalyst used. The properties do not change with higher filler content. Isotactic polypropylene was produced with the rac-[Et(IndH4)2]ZrCl2- and rac [Me2Si(2-Me-4-(1-Naph)Ind)2]ZrCl2-catalyst. The polypropylene of the nanocomposites which were synthesized with the rac [Me2Si(2 Me 4 (1 Naph)Ind)2]ZrCl2-metallocene have tacticities of 90 % while polypropylene of the nanocomposites which were produced with the rac [Et(IndH4)2]ZrCl2-catalyst have lower tacticities ranging from 55 till 60 %.
Polypropylene-composites with silicon carbide whiskers could be polymerised in-situ. With a higher amount of the silicon carbide whiskers in the feed, the filler content in the polymer gets higher. The activity varies from 2300 to 3500 kgPolymer/(molZr * h* mol/Propylene). Melting points were detected at 157 °C, crystallinities between 40 and 60 %, glass temperatures from 113 to 117 °C and molecular weights between 180000 and 250000 g/mol.
