verschiedener meteorologischer Parameter genutzt.
Mithilfe des ILD-Index wird ein Island-Lofoten-Druckmuster identifiziert,
das sich bis in die Stratosphäre erstreckt. Zusätzlich wird der Zusammenhang
der Island-Lofoten-Druckschaukel mit weiteren meteorologischen Parametern
untersucht.

The North Atlantic weather and climate, especially the position of the dominant
cyclone, has a strong influence on the weather situation in Europe. In the North Atlantic
exist two regions with high cyclone activity, which affect the meridional heat
fluxes directed to Europe. These centers of activity are located over the Irminger
Sea near Iceland and over the Norwegian Sea near the Lofotes Islands. The centers
are nearly at the position of a primary and secondary minimum in mean sea level
pressure (SLP). The cyclone activity in the Lofotes region, the variability in time and
space of the Lofotes pressure minimum and its connection to large scale circulation
of the atmosphere are subject of this study.
This work focuses on meteorological phenomena with different timescales and
spatial extensions. On the one hand these are single cyclones in the Lofotes region,
that have lifetimes of up to two weeks. On the other hand this work focusses on
different states of the North Atlantic low pressure zone and their connections to
large scale northern hemisphere circulation patterns in monthly means of SLP.
The mean SLP fields used for all analyses in this study are taken from the ERA-40
re-analysis data set and cover the time period 1957 - 2002. Two different methods
for analysis of cyclones and cyclone tracks are used and compared to each other.
Each method is following a different approach: the first is a partly manual method
and the second a totally automated method. The comparison of the results of these
methods in the context of this work shows a good agreement.
The characteristics of the Lofotes cyclones and their cyclone tracks are examined.
The analysis of the Lofotes cyclone tracks shows that they often occur over the
Atlantic and dissolve in the Arctic regions. Compared to summer, the number of
Lofotes cyclones increases during winter months and its pressure decreases.
Furthermore a climate index is defined, describing the Iceland-Lofotes pressure
difference (ILD) in the North Atlantic low pressure zone. Based on this ILD-index,
a composite analysis of different meteorological parameters was performed and
an ILD-pattern was identified. During winter, this pattern extends through the
troposphere into the stratosphere. The connection between the different states of
the North Atlantic low pressure zone, characterized by the ILD-index, and other
meteorological parameters is shown. The ILD pressure pattern has an effect on air
temperatures in the regions ranging from Northamerica to Siberia, on the arctic sea
ice and the precipitation in the area of North Atlantic and Europe. The ILD-index
is until the year 1976 strongly correlated with the index of the North Atlantic
oscillation (NAO), but nearly not correlated afterwards.
From the results of this work we get a better understanding of the atmospheric
states of the North Atlantic low pressure zone, its variability with time and its
connection to large scale atmospheric variations of the northern hemisphere.
