This thesis deals with the synthesis of Pt- and FePt-NPs, their composites with CNTs, the characterization of these materials and the application of the NP-CNT composites as catalysts for methanol oxidation as well as oxygen reduction.
The results of the second chapter show, that the reactivity of the metallic precursors has a strong influence on the growth and in particular the nucleation of FePt-NPs. The use of PtCl2 as platinum precursor instead of the more reactive Pt(acac)2 leads to a decrease in the rate of nucleation and growth and thereby to a significant increase in particle diameter.
Furthermore, a new method for controlled secondary growth of precursors on existing particles was introduced, the continuous injection method. It was shown that a reactive surface of the NPs is needed for its growth, and that this exists only in early stages of the reaction.
Annealing experiments in reductive atmosphere were performed with FexOy-FePt core- shell particles. The reduction of the iron oxide shell and full interdiffusion of the iron atoms into the iron depleted core to form Fe50Pt50 NPs was observed already at temperatures as low as 300 °C.
Chapter three describes the high density growth of vertically aligned MWCNTs on Si/SiO2 wafers. Although the bulk of the MWCNTs are vertically aligned a disordered network of MWCNTs exists on top of the MWCNT layers. This network enables the use of these MWCNT layers as substrates for catalyst NPs. Charges generated on attached NPs can be dissipated through the dense lower layer of the aligned MWCNTs with a sheet resistivity of 540 +/- 150 Ohm(sq).
The use of a Fe(NO3)3 catalyst solution prove to be advantageous compared to the use of an FeCl2 catalyst solution because of its superior stability and flexibility in use. The reason for this finding can be tracked back to the higher solubility of the Fe(NO3)3 in ethanol. When the nitrate is used, it takes iron particles shorter to form in solution and grow to a diameter that is large enough to catalyze MWCNT growth. In addition, these particles are less prone to agglomeration and precipitation than those formed from FeCl2 as precursor.
The immobilization of FexPt1-x as well as Pt-NPs on SWCNTs, MWCNTs and GC-spheres was achieved by several methods in chapter three. The ease of use of these synthetic protocols opens up a wide variety of possible large scale applications for these composite materials, i.e. as catalyst substrate combinations. The attachment of the NPs is reversible and can be undone through simple addition of oleyl amine and treatment in an ultrasonic bath. The CNTs do not need to be functionalized prior to the attachment. Therefore, their electronic structure as well as their semiconducting or conducting nature is preserved throughout this process.
No influence of the CNTs on the properties of the NPs was found and the immobilization of the NPs was monitored during the reaction. Raman spectroscopy experiments showed no evidence of covalent bonding of the NPs to the CNTs. The dependence of the attachment of the FePt NPs on their iron content, literature data about the adsorption of iron and platinum atoms on CNTs, the differences in the work functions of CNTs and the metals as well as first principle calculations strongly suggest charge transfer from the CNTs to the NPs to be the predominant reason for the attachment.
The fifth chapter describes the synthesis of composite electrodes. These were comprised of Pt and FePt NPs immobilized on MWCNTs, which had been grown on Si/SiO2 wafers. The results show particle diameters and compositions comparable to those obtained in chapter four. These composite electrodes exhibited mass currents of up to 310 mA mg-1 when used for methanol oxidation. These values equal those obtained with the industrial standard (Pt/C (E-Tek), Vulcan XC-72R). Careful investigation into the cyclic voltammograms as well as electrochemical impedance data revealed that the efficiency of the composite electrodes was limited by their high sheet resistance of 130 +/- 60 Ohm(sq). The work presented here should be carried on by eliminating the sheet resistance. This could be achieved by growing the MWCNTs on conducting substrates, paving the way to significantly increased mass currents.
The use of the aforementioned composite electrodes for oxygen reduction was not hampered by the sheet resistance, as the absolute currents were low. Still, the measured mass currents were excellent and surpassed literature data several times. While the absolute currents need to be increased the composite electrodes provided in this work showed high potential for the oxygen reduction as well as the methanol oxidation.
