In this thesis various possibilities for development of materials based on renewable feedstocks have been investigated. The main focus was put on the use of wood. The thesis is divided into three thematic parts. In part one, the potential of the lignin derived molecule vanillin was studied and developed for the use in polycondensation reactions. In the next part, the developed monomers were used for synthesis of aliphatic aromatic polyesters. Finally fully biodegradable wood plastic composites
(WPCs) based on polybutylene adipate are presented. The first part of this work is based on the idea that aromatic bulk chemicals isolable from the renewable basis lignin are useful resources for plastic feedstock. Starting
from vanillin, monomers have been developed that are suitable for polyester synthesis. Two vanillin molecules were thus linked at the phenolic groups. As links, dialkyl ethers or carbonate were introduced. For use in polyester condensation reactions, the aldehyde groups were subsequently oxidized and converted into methyl ester moieties. In addition it was shown that vanillin would react at the aldehyde group to ferulic acid or their derivatives. Monomer syntheses were optimized at 50 g level. The second part concerns the melt condensation reactions of the monomers prepared. Thus aliphatic aromatic polyesters were obtained by transesterfication of the ester with ethylene glycol or 1,4-butanediol. The aim was thus achieved of synthesizing polyesters analogous to PET and PBT which can be obtained entirely from renewable
raw materials. Analogous to polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), these
aromatic monomers were further utilized as comonomer in polybutylene adipate. This would improve the material properties of the aliphatic polyester. Advantageous over terephthalic acid in PBAT is that these aromatic monomers are renewable raw materials. In the last part material properties of polybutylene adipate are reported, which were modified by addition of wood flour. The aim was to develop a fully biodegradable WPC from renewable resources. To improve the adhesion between wood and polyester,
additives based on the matrix polymer were developed. By transesterfication
of PBA with a PEG 600 block, copolymers were synthesized and extensively characterized. Furthermore, PBA was grafted with maleic acid anhydride. Both kinds of copolymers were used in WPCs and sceened for their ability to act as coupling agent in the compounded WPC. Particulary the use of maleic grafted PBA could improve the material properties of the PBA based WPCs.
