In the present work, novel cyclometallated complexes with donor- and acceptor-substituted ligands have been prepared by a newly developed anionic variant of cyclometalation that enables very mild reaction conditions at 55 °C and even works at a temperature of 0 °C. This provides access to a variety of new complexes, as demonstrated by the cyclometalation of a chiral donor- and acceptor-substituted 2-phenylpyridine, as well as the cyclometalation of a dendritic system with three 2-phenylpyridine strands. However, the latter synthesis also highlights the difficulty of synthesizing a tris-cyclometalated compound, which actually was attempted. Instead, here, as in the other syntheses, a dinuclear compound with two dendrimer units was obtained in which, out of a total of six dendrimeric strands, only four were cyclometalated. It was possible to determine the constitution of this compound by means of NMR spectroscopy. The synthesis of the tris-cyclometalated compound has been tried several times with single strand 2-phenylpyridines and, after the cyclometalated compound RhdCM06 reacted once more with deprotonated 2-phenylpyridine, indications were obtained that the desired compound was formed, however only to a limited amount and most likely as the mer-configured variant. A cross-coupling reaction using iron as the metal for the catalyst and a electrochemical cross-coupling reaction with a nickel-containing catalyst has been performed, the latter reaction proved to be very useful for the direct synthesis of donor and acceptor substituted 2-phenylpyridines. A special feature of this reaction is the tolerance of hydroxy and carboxy groups, therefore, also substituted 2-phenylpyrines suitable for the synthesis of dendritic compounds were well accessible without the use of protecting groups, which was an important reason that the dendritic compound with mesitylene as a base could successfully be made. In contrast to the compound with unsubstituted 2-phenylpyridine, the compound with acetal substituents proved to be soluble enough for a complete characterization as well as for an additional synthesis. Using theoretical chemistry, it was possible to calculate molecular structures of the compounds prepared as well as those compounds whose preparation was not possible. Thanks to the data obtained from the X-ray structure analysis, a detailed comparison with experimental data was also possible in the case of the complex RhdCM06 and of some free 2-phenylpyridines. This not only gave an impression of the spatial structure and the resulting consequences for stereoisomerism, which would not have been readily possible simply by imagination, especially in the case of the chiral cyclometalated compound.
The calculations on nonlinear optical activity provided reasonable results, which could in the case of the compound IrdCM06 also be compared with experimental data from the measurement of hyper-rayleigh-scattering. Notable enhancement of nonlinear optical activity due to the adjacent arrangement
alone would not be expected for binuclear complexes according to these calculations. But the calculations showed that such an arrangement allows excitation pathways across multiple ligands. This in turn results in a redistribution of the total hyperpolarizability, which also includes more tensor components. This could be a considerable source of influence for measurements with the EFISHG method, but in contrast, not for measurements by means of hyper-Rayleigh scattering. However, in the case of the fac-configured cyclometalated complexes, there should be a significant increase of nonlinear optical activity according to the calculations carried out here.
However, the theoretical investigation of complexes with other transition metals showed that there might be another aspect that should lead to strongly increased hyperpolarizabilities. This is the presence of unpaired electrons, whereby not only their number but in particular their localization in the molecule and the type of possible charge transfer transitions would be of considerable importance. Since these electrons can also be located in orbitals that are not localized at the electron donor but at the acceptor, charge transfer might occur in the opposite direction. Together with other excitation pathways, this even leads in some cases to greater hyperpolarizability for the mer-configured variant than for the fac-configured variant. Overall, the strongest hyperpolarizability was calculated for the fac-configured high-spin nickel complex.
