In the present work studies on the nature of the Rh-C-bond in methyl-porphyrinato-rhodium-complexes aiming at a nucleophilic functionalisation of the methyl-ligand should be done. First of all the influence of a nucleophile coordinating trans to the methyl-ligand on the nature of the Rh-C-bond and a possible nucleophilic functionalisation was of interest.
The complex dtbpRh(CH3) (3) was therefore synthesised and brought to reaction with para-substituted pyridine-molecules. The 1JCH-coupling constants of both the five-coordinated compound 3 and the derived six-coordinated 1:1 adducts were investigated. Using the hammett-parameters of the pyridines para-substituents a correlation between the structures and the 1JCH-coupling constants of the rhodium bound methyl-ligands could be established. The studies were supported by comparing the 1JCH-coupling constants of the complexes with data from synthesised N-methyl-pyridinium iodides. Further the geometries of the methyl-ligands werecalculated using DFT-methods.
A strong variation of the electronic nature of the methyl-ligand between the five-coordinated complex and the six-coordinated pyridine adducts was observed. For example the coupling constant declines from 1JCH = 142.6 Hz to 1JCH = 134.5 Hz when a pyridine-molecule coordinates to the complex dtbpRh(CH3) (3). This is seen as an umpolung of the Rh-C-bond from formal positively charged carbon atom and a formal negatively charged rhodium atom towards a rather nonpolar bond.
β-chlorinated and β-brominated porphyrinato-ligands were choosen by comparism of electrochemical data to study the influence of the equatorial porphyrinato-ligand on the nature of the Rh-C-bond.
A slight increase of the 1JCH-coupling constant of the methyl-ligand in the complexes bocpRh(CH3) (8Cl) and bobpRh(CH3) (8Br) of about dJ ca.1 Hz was obsereved. The influence of axial coordination of nucleophiles on the nature of the Rh-C-bond is thereby greater than the influence of the equatorial porphyrinic ligand.
However a nucleophilic functionalisation of the methyl-ligands in the complexes bocpRh(CH3) (8Cl) und bobpRh(CH3) (8Br) using PPh3 as a nucleophile could be established. An equilibrium between the six-coordinated 1:1 PPh3 adducts of the complexes 8Cl and 8Br and the corresponding four-coordinated porphyrinato-rhodium anions with methyl-triphenyl-phosphanium cations was observed in excess of the nucleophile. A single crystal structure of the ionic complex bobpRh–PPh3CH3+ (9Br) was obtained. A nucleophilic functionalisation is possible dispite the weak influence of the electron-poor porphyrinato-ligands on the Rh-C-bond. It is assumed that the major effect of the electronpoor porphyrinato-ligands is the stabilisation of the reaction products, the porphyrinato-rhodiumII-anions. The eased reduction of the β-brominated methyl-complex bobpRh(CH3) (8Br) compared to the β-protonated methyl-complex tbpRh(CH3) (8H) may serve as evidence for this assumption. The use of porphyrinato-ligands that don´t al-
low axial coordination of nucleophiles trans to a methyl ligand, like capped porphyrins, may further improve nucleophilic functionalisation of the methyl ligand in these complexes since the desasactivating effekt of such a coordination would be prohibited. Since chloro- and bromo-substituents may be introduced in existing porphyrinato-systems capped porphyrins may be modified with ease to alter their electrochemical porperties.
Furthermore the impact of an excess of nucleophile on the intermediate stages of a possible catalytical cycle for the oxidation of methan by porphyrinato-rhodium-complexes has been discussed. Nucleophiles react with the C-H-activating rhodiumII-complexes as well as with hydrido-porphyrinato-rhodium-complexes. This should be considered when catalysts for thisreaction are designed.
Scientific findings about the nature of the Rh-C-bond in methyl-porphyrinato-rhodium-complexes and the influence of both the equatorial porphyrinato-ligand, as well as another
axial ligand on the nature of that bond were gained in the present work. A nucleophilic functionalisation of the rhodium bound methyl-ligands of complexes with easily accessable
β-chlorinated and β-brominated porphyrinic ligands could be established. Considering the
impact of nucleophiles on the different stages of a possible catalytic cycle for methan oxidation with porphyrinato-rhodium-complexes future design of catalysts for this purpose can now be more specific.
