Metal-ligand multiple bonds are a curiosity in the chemistry of late transition metals. Causing by the destabilizing pi antibonding interactions by forming pi bonds between an electron rich late transition metal and an pi donor ligand. However, these complexes are assigned by an high reactivity towards non-activated C–H bonds. For this reason, the catalytic active species of the catalytic cycle postulated by Prof. Burger for the selective aerobic oxidation of methane to methanol is based on cationic Rhodium(III) and/or Iridium(III) complexes with a terminal metal oxo unit. This cycle forms the basis of the present study. For the systems a pyridine-diimine ligand, (2,6-Bis-[1-(arylimino)ethyl]-pyridine), was chosen. This ligand prevents a dimerisation of the terminal pi donor unit by the sterical demanding phenyl substituents and stabilizes the system by its pi acceptance ability.
Till this day no such cationic rhodium or iridium complex with a terminal oxo unit were synthesized. Thus, the present study demonstrates that a metal-ligand multiple bond in square planar complexes with the terdentate pyridine-diimine ligand is indeed possible to be synthesized. This can be proved by the synthesis of rhodium and/or iridium complexes with a terminal nitrido unit. Importantly, these neutral nitrido complexes are isoelectronic to the cationic oxo species. Since nitrido complexes can be efficienly synthesized by N2 extrusion from the respective azido complexes, in the present study a route of synthesis for azido complexes was established. The azido complexes turned out to be excellent precursors for the named nitrido complexes. For both metal complexes an extrusion of molecular nitrogen was observed. However, for the rhodium system the N2 extrusion was immediately followed by a further intramolecular reaction. At this juncture a so called ”tuckin“ complexwas formed. Contrastingly, the complex can be obtained by thermolysis as analytical pure product. At higher temperature the iridium nitrido complex can also be converted to another “tuck-in“ complex. The thermodynamic parameters of the thermolysis reactions were calculated for both metal complexes. The energies from DFT calculations are comparable to the reaction
enthalpies obtained by thermoanalytical measurements (DSC).
The iridium nitrido complex was further characterized by 15N isotopic labeling and diverse spectroscopic methods (NMR, IR, XPS, XAS) and finally by X-ray crystallography. All experimental data are consistent with an iridium center in the oxidation state +3, a neutral pyridine-diimine and a triple bonded nitrido ligand. Further theoretical considerations have been made for the in-depth understanding of the nature of the Ir(III)–N bond. Due to the fact that the wavefunction of nitrido model complex shows a remarkable multireference character, the calculations at the DFT level of theory have been expanded to multireference methods (CASSCF, MCQDPT2). The results showed unumbiguously that a neutral pyridine-diimine ligand is coordinated to the iridium center. The observed high covalence of the Ir–N bond is the onliest complexity for the assignment of the oxidation state of the iridium center. Considering the spectroscopic data, the assignment of this iridium nitrido complex is reasonably described by an d6 configuration. The iridium nitrido complex was studied regarding to its reactivity towards molecular hydrogen and the nucleophile trimethylamine-N-oxide. It showed to have the ability to activate molecular hydrogen resulting in the formation of an amido complex. The mechanism of this reaction was clarified through DFT calculations. It turned out that the activation of H2 occurs at the nitrido ligand itself without involvement of the metal center. The reaction product of the conversion of the nitrido complex with trimethylamine-N-oxide turned out to be a nitrosyl complex.
Herein, the iridium center exhibits the oxidation state +1. The nitrosyl ligand is coordinated as NO+ and the pyridine-diimine ligand as twice reduced ligand. Importantly, this nitrosyl complex is the first known example of a twice reduced pyridine-diimine ligand in a complex of a late 5d transition metal. By this work it was unumbiguously shown that it is indeed possible to stabilize such a metal-ligand multiple bond with the chosen pyridine-diimin ligand system. The electronic structure of the Ir(III)–N bond was illustrated by expensive experimental and theoretical analyses. It was shown, that the nitrido ligand dominates the reactivity of the complex. These findings are, therefore, a excellent ground for further research on pi donor complexes of late transition metals in low oxidation states.
