The Main subject of this dissertation is material culture in the Mesoamerican context and the objective of this study is to research everyday objects as part of the material culture of Maya students at the University of Quintana Roo.
The study of objects within specific cultural and social contexts is a way of understanding the meaning that their use represents for the individual in the specific social group.
The main disciplines that were considered in this study were Cultural Anthropology, Sociology to understand the meaning attributed to objects as agents in social practice, Design whose Main objective is the configuration of objects and Semiotics.
The meanings of objects are analyzed from the user perspective based on observation but more on a participatory research process were the user discussed the function and meaning of the object in use.
The Main elements for this study were the following three.
First the students and their social group, in this specific case university students from Maya communities in the state of Quintana Roo.
Second, the context within which the objects are used; on one side the physical context were both the urban as well as the community context were considered and on the other side the temporary context defined by everyday life and everyday activities.
The third element and central area of interest were the objects that constitute the material culture of these students. These objects were analyzed after constructing an inventory of everyday activities and of the objects used in them registering frequency and spatial context of use. This student-user constructed inventory permitted the analysis of the importance of every object and allowed the identification of the meaning attributed by every user.
Studying objects from the perspective of the user permitted the generation of a wealth of information based on individual experiences as opposed to simple researcher observation. It allowed the understanding of how specific objects are used fulfilling certain functions, the way on which this instrumental benefit is assimilated and ultimately the meaning that every object acquires during use and the way it is therefore incorporated into the material culture.
