In this dissertation the conversion of xylan from different origins by different cyclic organic carbonates (COCs) should be investigated. Resulting from an altering of the biopolymers‟ chemical structure, novel gels and polyurethanen should be obtained. Additionally the potential of COCs to substitute toxic, carcinogenic and highly explosive epoxides for the sustainable chemical modification of xylans should be examined.
Xylans are isolated from oat spelts, beech wood and eucalypt pulp and used for derivatization. Depending on its source, the substituents of the biopolymer differ. This influences the properties of the different macromolecules and affects solubility and reactivity. Within this thesis it is shown that xylan from oat spelts have the best solubility and reactivity regarding the derivatization by COCs. This is advantageous because oat spelts are a by-product from the processing of oats. Furthermore no delignification is required for the isolation.
All used xylans can be successfully converted by propylene carbonate (PC) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Using 13C NMR spectroscopy the degree of substitution (DS) as well as the molar substitution (MS) can be quantified. By variation of the parameters temperature and time products with DS values between 0.1 and 1.5 can be obtained. The degree of side chain growth is low because the conversion of a native hydroxyl group is preferred. By two dimensional NMR spectroscopy it can be shown that the OH group of carbon C-2 is getting substituted when derivatized by PC. FTIR spectroscopic measurements prove that a complete decarboxylation occurs during the reaction. Therefore PC is a suitable substitute for propylene oxide. Furthermore the water solubility of the xylans is getting significantly improved by hydroxypropylation.
Oat spelt xylan is as well derivatized by propylene carbonate under heterogeneous conditions in the absence of DMSO. The obtained products cannot be dissolved, but swollen in DMSO. In this state the derivatives can be examined using the high resolution magic angle spinning (HRMAS) NMR method. Within this thesis the usage of HRMAS NMR for derivatized biopolymers is established. The developed method allows the quantification of DS and MS of the heterogeneously converted samples. Results show that under both reaction conditions similar DS values can be obtained. On the other hand, growth of the side chain by homopolymerisation is increased significantly under heterogeneous conditions. This is caused by sterical hindrances during the reaction without DMSO. The higher length of the side chains is the most likely cause for the observed insolubility. Like under homogeneous conditions, the hydroxyl group of C-2 is substituted preferably under heterogeneous conditions. This preference is more distinct when no DMSO is used for derivatization. The increased side chain growth is caused by a higher rate of homopolymerization. This leads to an incomplete decarboxylation as shown by FTIR spectroscopy. The longer side chains lead to an entanglement. Therefore, in swollen state, the materials can be rheologically characterized as gels.
The conversion of xylans with PC was transferred to reactions with vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC). Thereby it is possible to functionalize the biopolymer with vinyl groups. Compared to PC, VEC shows a slightly lower reactivity towards native hydroxyl groups, whereas homopolymerization of the side chain is slightly increased. Reactions with VEC lead to a complete decarboxylation.
The incorporated double bonds can be crosslinked by radical reactions. This method allows the formation of xylan gels without using enzymes or linkers. Gelation can be observed and proven by rheology. If an azo compound is used as radical initiator, gels with a lot of bubbles are obtained. These are caused by the formation of nitrogen as a result of the decomposition of the initiator. Bubble formation is highly sensitive towards a variety of factors, including DS, MS, concentration of the solution, amout of radical initiator as well as the surface-to-volume ratio of the chosen reaction system. As a result, reproducibility is practically impossible. It would be necessary to determine the optimal parameters separately for each batch. If, on the other hand, a peroxide is used to crosslink the vinyl groups of the xylan derivatives, it is possible to obtain reproducible, bubble-free gels. Rheological measurements prove, that this initiator forms a gel as well. However, it is not possible to completely remove the DMSO by drying, making the creation of aero- and cryogels impossible. A solvent exchanges shows to be a too high strain on the pore structure, leading to its collaps.
Additionally to the manufacturing of gels, the option of using xylans for the formation of non-isocyanate based polyurethanes (NIPUs) is examined. By transesterification with gylcerine carbonate (GC) it is possible to obtain diol-functionalized xylans. Comparing GC to PC and VEC, the COC shows a lower reactivity towards xylan. Based on the results from two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy it can be hypothesized that the derivatization using GC only occours on one hydroxyl group of either C-2 or C-3. Diol-functionalized xylans can be transesterified using dimethyl carbonate (DMC). Via FTIR and NMR spectroscopy it can be shown that both, cyclic and linear carbonates are formed. These products are promising precursors for the formation of NIPUs since carbonates react with amines, forming urethanes.
In another approach xylan is converted with DMC in ethanolic potassium hydroxide (KOH). Analysis of products by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy points towards a formation of co oligomers of DMC and xylan. These products show thermoplastic properties. Results are confirmed by thermical conversion with polyethyleneimine (PEI), resuling it an orange-coloured polymer. Via FTIR spectra the characteristic bands of carbamates (urethane bonds) can be proven. These are caused by the reaction of amines with carbonates and therefore subsequently confirm the structure of the product of the conversion of xylan and DMC with KOH. A NIPU is created by using xylan and DMC in combination with a strong base.
